dkms module for the nvidia driver failing on new kernel

I'm at the machine and just rebooted - it said
"Bad exit status: 10"
failed to build module

any insights on how to troubleshoot this gratefully accepted - looked through 
various logs but couldn't find any references to 'dkms'
