I can confirm that diatonis_dts_secret-universe.wav plays fine with 
mplayer on my FC5 box (no spdif output though).
I have an up to date FC5 machine, using just core, extras, freshrpms and 
rpmforge as repos.
I'm rather ignorant about all this, but couldn't you have some packages 
that interfere with the freshrpms mplayer? eg from ccrma or other repos.
Maybe you should triple check all the relevant rpms.
