ATI driver not modifing xorg.conf

Hello,
 I just bought a Dell Inspiron 1501, running FC6 x86_64 on it. It has a 
Radeon Xpress 1150 card (Xpress 200M chip) that is supposed to fully wok 
with the fglrx driver. I installed first the 8.29 driver then updated to 
8.32. Nothing happened. Then I checked xorg.conf and noticed it was 
still using the radeon driver, no changes were made to it. I switched to 
fglrx driver and disabled Composite, and now glxinfo reports direct 
rendering activated, but it still uses the SGI server GLX. Is this the 
right behaviour for the ATI proprietary driver? glxgears gives me around 
1600fps (too slow!) and ppracer is sluggish and full of artifacts.
